Here’s What Walking for 24 Hours Straight on a Treadmill Did to This Guy’s Body
In a physical challenge undertaken last year, YouTuber President Chay spent 24 hours walking non-stop on a treadmill. Chay begins the challenge at 6:34 p.m., burning an estimated 300 calories an hour, and is both energetic and optimistic about the night and day ahead—at first.
“The first hour passed, and I was so excited,” he says. “But then I just kept thinking, I still have 23 hours left, and my lower back was already getting sore.”
The fatigue, soreness, and chafing all soon worsen, and it’s not long before Chay realizes just how much of an ordeal this challenge is really going to be.
“My legs are in pain. Extreme pain,” he says at around midnight. “At very first, it started in my lower back, like hour one, then it went to the insides of my ankles, then it went to the outsides of my ankles, then my hips, then back to the ankles. Now it’s in my butt… The thought of giving up has definitely crossed my mind, probably more and more as time goes on.”
Chay’s ankles become increasingly swollen, and the pain keeps getting worse, and he still hasn’t reached the halfway point. “I keep thinking I’ve accomplished something, then I remember I’ll still be walking this time tomorrow,” he says.
When he finally makes it into the home stretch, with just 3 hours to go, Chay is expecting to feel a second wind, but it’s not forthcoming.
“This is the hardest freaking part,” he says. “All the blisters on the bottom of my feet have popped. My wrists hurt from holding myself up. I wouldn’t recommend doing this… I’ve gone 32.3 miles so far without stopping. All I wish is for this to be over.”
Chay eventually finishes the 24 hours, having walked 112,000 steps and 35.42 miles. “Was it worth it? No.” He says. “This is the slowest, most painful process I have ever been a part of.”
