Optical illusion does something freaky when you stare at the black dot for 10 seconds

AN OPTICAL illusion is baffling people online, and has even been branded ‘scary’ as thousands attempt it.

The mostly beige image has various coloured dots all around the edge, with a black dot in the middle.

The brain teaser was shared on Twitter, by Amanita, who said: “Stare at the black dot for 10 seconds, and the colours will disappear.”

The optical illusion should see the entire image turn to beige, but people have reported wildly varying results.

Explaining the science behind the optical illusion, Amanita added: “Explanation: the eye can only see properly in a small area of the retina.

“So to see the whole image, we must move the eye and then the brain builds the image.

The eye can only see properly in a small area of the retina

“When we force the eye to state at the dot, the brain builds the image with what it sees around it, which is just beige.”

Thousands liked the image and commented on it, describing what they saw when they stared at the dot – with some calling the illusion ‘scary’.

One person wrote: “Colors stayed, dot split into two, left and right then 3  no dot in middle.”

Another said: “No….. the colours don't disappear, no matter how long you stare at them.”

A third thought: “For me the colors disappeared only in a circular area around the dot. I still saw colors on most of the total area.”

Another added: “For me the colours faded almost to the point of disappearing but not quite.”

This person commented: “For me the black dot disappeared.”

While somebody else reckoned: “Interesting. They disappear when I lean in a bit closer to my screen and focus on the dot.

“When I'm just at my regular distance (sitting comfortably at my desk) the colours in the bottom half of the image disappear, but not the ones in the top half.”

So what do you see when you stare for 10 seconds?
