Award-winning American actor Michael Douglas, 76, has addressed an awkward family situation while out with his wife Catherine Zeta Jones, 51, and children, Carys, 18, and Dylan, 20. Appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the star revealed that he was recently mistaken for his daughter’s grandfather while celebrating an important milestone.
I’m not gonna take it personal, they’re just trying to be nice
Carys recently graduated from high school and Michael revealed that while attending the event, he was taken aback at a comment from other parents.
The actor explained that he was mistaken for his daughter’s grandfather, admitting it was “a little rough” to hear it.
Speaking to the singer and host, he said: “I gotta tell you Kelly, it’s a little rough when you’re going out the doors and the other parents are saying, ‘Oh congratulations… you must be so proud of your granddaughter’.”
Michael continued: “I said, ‘Well, I don’t know man. Yeah okay’.”
However, despite the initial shock, the actor said he wasn’t going to take the comment personally and continued to enjoy the ceremony.
“I’m not gonna take it personal, they’re just trying to be nice,” he explained.
Michael was joined by his wife and actress Catherine and their son Dylan to watch Carys celebrate her graduation.
However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the family had to watch the event on screen.
At the time the Basic Instinct actor shared sweet snaps of the family, writing: “Congratulations to Carys and the entire class of 2021! Your Mom and I are so proud of you!
“We love you so much and we are so excited for your future as the best is yet to come! Dad.”
One of the pictures featured Carys being lifted by her brother as she held her diploma.
Catherine also posted a family picture, penning: “Carys!!! What a proud day as our daughter Carys graduates with honors for her International Baccalaureate! You rock and we love you.”
Michael also added that he and his wife were nervously anticipating becoming “empty nesters” ahead of their children growing up and moving out.
He added to Catherine: “It’s scary. It really is. You look at each other and go, ‘Well, it’s just you and me babe.’
“You forget how many conversations you sort of hide behind in terms of talking about your kids and what’s going on next and this and that, and then one day you just look at each other…
“We’re 20 years now, so all those good years of paying attention to each other are paying off now.”(sic)
The Hollywood power couple have been married for over two decades, despite living separately for a brief period in 2013.
They tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony at the Plaza Hotel in New York in 2000 when Catherine was 28 and Michael was 53.
Michael also has one son, Cameron Douglas, with his ex-wife Diandra Luker.
