Princess Beatrice allegedly made a "last minute request" to borrow her grandmother the Queen's dress for her surprise wedding.

The 31 year old wore a Sir Norman Hartnell diamanté encrusted taffeta gown from Her Majesty to marry Italian property developer Edoard Mapelli Mozzi, 36, in Windsor on Friday, 17 July.

The Queen wore the same gown to the royal premiere of Lawrence of Arabia at London's Leicester Square back in December 1962.

However, insiders have now revealed that Princess Beatrice didn't always plan on wearing the 94 year old monarch's dress, but made the personal request after having a "change of heart" on her original wedding gown.

A source explained to People magazine: "Beatrice made a request [to borrow one from the Queen], and that was kindly granted – and it looked amazing! It was touching for both of them."

The stunning dress was remodelled and fitted by the Queen's senior dresser Angela Kelly and designer Stewart Parvin in just two weeks after coronavirus restrictions were eased on 4 July.

Princess Beatrice also donned the Queen Mary fringe tiara, which was also leant by the Queen for her granddaughter's special day.

The tiara was a personal touch to the ensemble as her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II also wore it on her wedding day to 99 year old Prince Philip in 1947.

Another source told the publication: "Beatrice talks about her grandmother often, and it’s clear there’s a strong bond there – the dress and the tiara could not have been more perfect."

They added that the newly wed's mum Sarah ferguson and Edo's mum Nikki Williams-Ellis, planned the day in record time as they said: "They swung into action and brought it all together in two weeks, which is quite extraordinary."

Royal writer Penny Junor also told the PA News Agency that the loan is a show of solidarity to Princess Beatrice, who also honoured her grandmother with her choice of wedding flowers.
