Steph McGovern, 38, welcomed her first child, a daughter, with her partner in November 2019. Discussing being an older parent following 50-year-old Naomi Campbell’s bombshell baby news yesterday, the presenter admitted she wished she’d started earlier.
I wish I did it when I was younger because then you have longer with them
She said: “It doesn’t seem to be controversial for men being older and having kids, but for women it is.
“When I had my daughter at 37, I was geriatric, by definition I am a geriatric mum.
“I do have a slight thing of thinking, oh I wish I did it when I was younger because then you have longer with them.”
Steph went on to ask Strictly Come Dancing star Anton du Beke, 54, his thoughts on the matter, after he became a dad for the first time aged 50.
The dancer had his first children, twins George and Henrietta, with wife Hannah Summers back in 2017.
“My wife Hannah, she was also the same as you, she was about your age, maybe a bit older,” he said.
The dancer joked his wife being referred to as a “geriatric” mum didn’t go down too well with her.
Agreeing, Steph chimed in: “It’s really hard to hear!”
He went on to say: “For the modern world, it’s all sort of flipped, ladies are inclined to have them later.
“It’s a bit cruel on the ladies to call them a geriatric.”
Anton added he didn’t have any regrets on having children at the age of 50.
He and his wife, who married in 2017, had their twins via IVF.

“I wouldn’t have been ready for it earlier in my life,” he admitted.
Steph tends to keep her family life out of the public eye and hasn’t revealed the identity of her daughter or partner.
Addressing why she prefers to stay out of the spotlight, she told Suzi Ruffell on her podcast Called Out: “It’s not like I’m ashamed of anything in my life.
“It’s more a case of, ‘I’m trying to lead as normal a life as I can’.”
The host added her sexuality had never been a problem and that most of her colleagues knew her partner is female.
She added: “I just want to do my job and I know that my job comes under certain scrutiny, and profile.
“I just think that the less I talk about my private life, the less I can be asked about it.”
The mother-of-one added she has “never officially come out’ as she explained she has dated both men and women.
Steph’s Packed Lunch airs weekdays from 12.30pm on Channel 4.
