The Knack Transform ‘My Sharona’ Into ‘Bye, Corona’
The Knack members reunited to transform their No. 1 hit “My Sharona” into “Bye, Corona” to promote social distancing amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Knack guitarist Burton Averre took to YouTube for a video and showed fans how to play the guitar solo from “My Sharona.”
“Some people have asked whether we were gonna get around to doing our own ‘Sharona / Corona’ parody song, because apparently, there aren’t enough of them,” Averre said in the video.
He added, “Sadly, our lead singer is no longer with us, and trust me, you don’t want to hear me croak it out.”
The band’s frontman Doug Fieger died in 2010 due to cancer.
Instead of showing a hand-washing tutorial, Averre decided to show fans a close-up “instruction video” of the song’s guitar solo.
At the end of the solo, bassist Prescott Niles joins him through video conferencing for the chorus, where they sing: “Bye, corona!”
“My Sharona,” released in 1979, hit No. 1 in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The track was certified Gold in the U.S.
The Knack’s debut album, Get the Knack, was also a hit and sold two million copies in the U.S.
