While on stage, Sir Tom Jones, 80, said he will think of the laughs he had with his late wife Linda before her death in 2016 aged 75. The Sex Bomb hitmaker said his spouse used to enjoy the jokes he used to tell her after coming off tour.

During her cancer battle, Linda urged Tom not to give up on his life because hers was coming to an end.

The singer’s wife died after a “short but fierce” fight with lung cancer.

He said: “Linda told me, ‘Don’t end your life just because my life is ending’.

“‘You’ve got to carry on for me. Get up on stage and do it’.”

Tom recalled how Linda also told him how she would “lift” him up on stage.

He went on to explain: “When I came off tour and went home to LA, one of the first things Linda would ask as I got through the door was, ‘Do you have any new jokes?’

“I’d keep a record of the funniest jokes to tell Linda, who loved to laugh at them.

“When she knew she was dying, Linda told me, ‘When you’re on stage, I want to lift you up’.”

She went on to tell him to think of her laughing at one of his jokes and not the memories of her being in hospital.

He added: “‘Keep that picture in your head and you’ll be able to sing any song you want’.”

The childhood sweethearts were married for 59 years and share son Mark, his manager, together.

One song he is looking forward to singing this summer is his hit I Won’t Crumble If You Fall.

“I’ll see Linda smiling,” he added of the track she inspired on his new album.

In a separate interview, The Voice UK judge discussed how he is still being able to sing at his age.

The She’s A Lady hitmaker said he is grateful he could still “push the s**t out of” his voice as he felt sorry for older singers who couldn’t.

Comedian Marc Maron then cheekily asked: “How’s everything else working with the pushing?”

Tom replied: “So far so good. There is always viagra. A little help here and there is alright.”

Marc added: “There is no shame in that at 80. You gotta do what you gotta do.”

“Exactly,” Tom agreed on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast.

The singer is believed to be single following Linda’s death.
