2GB, ABC Sydney top year’s final radio ratings
Talkback radio stations 2GB and ABC Sydney have topped the final radio survey of the year, despite suffering a post-lockdown ratings drop.
After Tuesday’s results, 2GB (owned by Nine, the publisher of this masthead) remains Sydney’s number one radio station with an overall audience share of 14.5 per cent (down 1.2 points). It leads ABC Sydney (9.4 per cent; down 2.9 points) and WSFM (8.8 per cent; up 0.7 points).

Reflecting post-vaccination optimism (the survey’s period pre-dated the rising concerns around Omicron), Tuesday’s final survey found listeners shifting away from the talkback stations that earned record-breaking numbers amid the lingering COVID lockdown earlier this year.
FM stations Triple J and Nova 96.9 recorded the survey’s strongest results, with the biggest swings going to Triple J’s drive slot hosted by Lewis Hobba and Michael Hing (8.1 per cent; up 2.3 points) and Nova 96.9’s breakfast slot hosted by Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald and Michael ‘Wippa’ Wipfli (6.9 per cent; up 2.2 points).
But despite the surprising swings in those key time slots, 2GB’s Ben Fordham dominated the breakfast period with an 18.5 per cent audience share (down 1.3 points) and ABC Sydney’s Richard Glover led in drive with a 9.7 per cent audience share (down 2.5 points).
Fordham called the end-of-year win a “strong show of faith from our listeners”.
“It’s an early Christmas present and we don’t take it for granted,” he said. “We don’t rest on our results. We’re already planning bigger things for 2022.”
The ratings period covered September 26 to December 4.
More to come.
