M&S launches vegan ‘bacon’ but some think it looks more like dog treats

Marks and Spencer has released plant-based “bacon” so vegans can enjoy a BLT.

The Plant Kitchen product is made from pea protein-based strips that sizzle and crisp up like real bacon.

When M&S unveiled the new product on Facebook, hundreds of shoppers were excited by the news.

One responder gushed: “I have already tried this Plant Kitchen bacon and it is absolutely delicious. What a great addition to your lovely vegetarian range and you can also freeze the bacon too. Good old M&S!”

Another said: “Plant kitchen is amazing! Can’t wait to try this also. Thank you so much M&S!”

And a third added: “I’m not veggie but this looks delicious! Great work, I can't wait to try!”

Despite the majority of comments being positive, there were some meat eaters who think the “facon” looks unappetising.

One responder admitted: “It looks like the dog treats I give my dog.”

Another agreed: “Looks like those bacon dog treats.”

A third wrote: “It looks as if its made from plastic" and a fourth joked: “Looks facon awful!”

Daily Star has contacted M&S for comment.

A finder.com survey estimates Britain’s vegan population will surge to around 2.2 million by the end of 2020.

Plant based diets have increased by 419,000 in the last 12 months.

And as Veganuary begins in January, more will be trying out the movement.

Apparently, the UK’s meat-free market will grow from £559m in 2016 to £658m in 2021.
