Mum slammed for naming baby ‘Arya’ but using a ‘stupid’ spelling
It can be difficult for parents to find baby names that are completely unique.
So in a bid to make their little ones stand out from the crowd, mums and dads are getting more daring.
This was the case for one woman, who decided to name her tot after Arya from Game of Thrones.
But as this moniker has shot up in popularity since the George R. R. Martin series burst onto the scene, she decided to change the spelling to make it seem unusual.
Her roommate spoke about this on Reddit – but feared she’d taken quirkiness too far.
She told the AITA forum : "My roommate is a big Game of Thrones fan. She’s pregnant with her first child right now.”
The post continues: "She decided to name her baby, Arya.
"When she asked my opinion of this name, I said I it was a good name with a good meaning (Arya means noble in Sanskrit), but a lot of people have named their kids Arya/Khaleesi/Sansa because of the popularity of GoT and it might be a little too common, not that it is a bad thing."
The pregnant woman took this feedback to heart so decided to change the spelling of the name.
Her friend added: "She said she’s found a way to name her baby ‘Arya’ and not have it be associated with other Aryas running around or the show.
"How? She said she wanted to spell it as Aughreighyah. I did a double-take reading that word too, but apparently, people are supposed to read it as Augh-reigh-ya or Arya."
This spelling was a step too far for the Redditor, who shared her brutally honest opinion with her friend.
She admitted: "She asked me how I felt about it and I told her that, frankly, Aughreighyah looks ridiculously stupid and she should just go with Arya.
"She got kinda upset and said that she and her partner came up with this only because I told them that the name is very common.
"I said that having a common name is better than having a confusing name."
The lass asked if she was being an “a***hole” for sharing her true thoughts with her pal.
Reddit users reassured the woman she’d done nothing wrong.
One said: “It’s dumb and she asked your honest opinion. Zero children have thanked their parents for dumb names.”
A second wrote: “That poor child will have to spell her name for everyone, and correct people mis-pronouncing it.”
A third commented: “You should not give your kid a name that looks like it could be a Welsh town.”
And a fourth joked: “Ask her 'Arya being stupid?’”
