People love this yeast-free peanut butter bread recipe from 1932
Forget banana bread – the next big thing in lockdown baking is this six-ingredient peanut butter loaf.
This recipe dates back to a book published in 1932 but it’s still just as delicious today.
It doesn’t require any yeast and of course, it will have a peanutty taste but if that’s your thing, this recipe is perfect for you.
The recipe, which was printed in the 1932 Canadian cookbook Five Roses: A Guide to Good Cooking by Elizabeth Driver, was posted on Reddit last year, but it recently resurfaced in the ‘Old Recipes’ subreddit and it seemed perfect for our current times.
It was also posted by the Glen & Friends Cooking food channel. According to host Glen, it was first printed in 1913 but each year, they would ask Canadian housewives to send in their favourite recipes for them to add to the book.
The recent Reddit post said: ‘Ran out of bread under lock down so we made the (delicious) peanut butter bread!’
You need just six things and you probably have them all in your store cupboard, but some people do suggest adding chocolate chips or raisins for an extra treat, just like with banana bread.
Two cups (260g) plain flour
1/4 cup (55g) caster sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/3 cup (320ml) milk
1/2 cup (125g) peanut butter
Preheat oven to 160oC
Mix together dry ingredients.
Mix in the milk, then the peanut butter.
Scrape into greased loaf pan and bake for about 1 hour.
Once it’s cooked the whole way through (you can check it by sticking a knife in the middle and making sure it comes out clean), let it cool slightly before you slice it up and enjoy.
