You might have only heard of Mercury Retrograde, but all planets Retrograde. This is when they appear to move backwards in orbit, but they don’t in reality. When this happens, the themes of the planet in astrology are emphasised, and we feel them more strongly on Earth. Saturn is all about maturity, responsibility, discipline, structure, stewardship, limits and endings in astrology, so that gives you a clue about how the next few months are going to go. Express.co.uk chatted to astrologer Francesca Oddie (@francescaoddieastrology on Instagram) and Moon Mentor Kirsty Gallagher (@kirsty_gallagher_) to find out how Saturn Retrograde will affect you.
Retrogrades happen when a planet backspins or appears to go backwards in its orbit.
The planet isn’t physically moving backwards, it is an illusion that occurs from where we are standing on Earth.
This might sound pretty boring, but it’s worth knowing about if you’re into astrology.
Retrogrades are supposed to have huge impacts on every star sign, especially those ruled by the planet in Retrograde.
On Sunday, May 23, Saturn went Retrograde and it will continue to do so until October 10, 2021.
That’s nearly five months of Saturn Retrograde and it happens every single year.
Slow-moving planets like Saturn only change signs every few years, and the sign is staying in Aquarius for a couple of years – including during the Retrograde.
When planets turn retrograde they are very potent and their themes become stronger.
Kirsty said: “Saturn is the planet of ambition, boundaries, lessons, responsibility and structures and these are the themes in our lives that Saturn will ask us to review.”
Saturn is in “future-focussed Aquarius,” so Kirsty predicts we’ll all be looking at what future we want to create for ourselves.
She said: “This is the time to take responsibility for our own life and commit to becoming the driving force in your life and committing to what you want.
“Once you do, Saturn will help you to create the structures and foundations you need to build upon and show you the next steps you need to take to attain your goals.”
These topics will keep popping up until October when the planet stations direct.
The interesting thing about Saturn Retrograde this year is that it is happening at the same time as the Sagittarius Full Moon Lunar Eclipse.
Francesca said: “You have to look at the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius and also look at Saturn Retrograde in Aquarius – now, what have Sagittarius and Aquarius got in common? They love the truth and they love freedom.
“We can expect there to be lots of news and shifts in what we know to be true,” she said.
“When Saturn loses its power we have the autonomy to look at situations independently and think for ourselves because Saturn puts fear wherever he is in the chart – with Saturn in Aquarius he puts fear to the individual as opposed to the collective.”
The Saturn Retrograde and Eclipse are both about getting out of your comfort zone and growth.
Kirsty noted: “This is a wonderful time to look at where you have been over the last year, where you are now in your life and where you actually want to be, and what you have allowed to prevent you from getting there.
“Where do you allow yourself to be restricted in life, whether that’s by your own doubts or fears or by external forces? What limitations do you put on yourself?
“What mistakes do you repeat over and over again in your life that keep you stuck?”
