Things are going well for me and it's time to leave my boyfriend behind
DEAR DEIDRE: MY first year at university was going really well until Covid-19 arrived and we were all sent home.
I’m a girl aged 19, I love my course, made great new friends and was really happy.

My boyfriend from school is also 19, went to a different university, hated his course, felt lonely and was miserable.
I had got to the point when I felt our lives were going in different directions and I was going to break up with him during the Easter vacation but of course we’ve both been stuck at home and I didn’t have the heart.
Now my uni friends are organising get-togethers. We socially distance but it’s great to see them.
My boyfriend resents them and I resent that, but I don’t want to hurt him.
DEIDRE SAYS: You do him no favours long-term by effectively carrying him.
Tell him your relationship has run its course – be kind but firm.
He should talk to his university if he wants to change course and see his student union for advice on this and on his wellbeing.
