Your diet is the first-place people start when they’re trying to lose weight.

Some diets are better than others when it comes to losing visceral fat in particular.

Dr Sarah Brewer has some recommendations about the type of diet you should switch to.

Working in association with CuraLife, the diabetes supplement, she said: “Following a diet that contains fewer carbohydrates, and more of the healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in nuts, seeds, fish, avocado, olive and rapeseed oils plus more fruit and vegetables is one of the healthiest ways to lose weight.

“Studies show that people eating a high-fat diet lost more weight than those following a high-carbohydrate diet, even though those consumed more calories.”

“This is because grains and processed carbs are quick sources of fuel for the body, and trigger release of insulin hormone which allow any excess calories to enter fat cells where they are stored as fat,” the doctor said.

“This suggests that the most effective way to lose weight long-term is to focus on cutting out processed carbohydrates, not calories.”

Meanwhile, in the United States, Harvard researchers have identified which diet burns the most calories.

Published in the British Medical Journal, the researchers said: “Our findings suggest that a more effective strategy to lose weight over the long term is to focus on cutting processed carbohydrates, not calories.”

They concluded in the BMJ that: “Consistent with the carbohydrate-insulin model, lowering dietary carbohydrate increased energy expenditure during weight loss maintenance. This metabolic effect may improve the success of obesity treatment, especially among those with high insulin secretion.”

Their study, that followed 234 clinically obese adults over a 10-week period in 2018, concluded that the participants on a low carbohydrate diet burned more calories than those who were eating more carbohydrates.

Harvard’s modelling suggested that eating foods and meals that had a lot of carbohydrates resulted in an overproduction of insulin.

Subsequently, this insulin resulted in the body storing more glucose and reduced the body’s ability to burn it.

Not only does Harvard University have information on how to improve your diet, so does the NHS.

They, along with other health providers, have a list of 12 tips to help you lose the weight you want to.

The first of these is not to skip breakfast as you might miss out on essential vitamins and end up replacing your breakfast with snacking.

Furthermore, they say to eat at regular times to help your body burn calories.

This too also reduces your temptation to snack.

The other ten tips to consider are:
• Eat plenty fruit and veg
• Get more active
• Drink plenty of water
• Eat high fibre foods
• Read food labels
• Use a smaller plate
• Do not ban foods
• Do not stock junk food
• Cut down on alcohol
• Plan your meals.
