NCIS season 17 was cut short due to the outbreak of coronavirus COVID-19 shutting down production on the CBS series. This has left fans wondering when the show will be returning with new episodes of the crime procedural – here’s what you need to know.

When does NCIS return?

Season 17 of NCIS ended early before its final four episodes could be completed when production shut down in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

This means the de facto season finale of the show was episode 20, which aired back on April 14.

Called The Arizona, viewers will remember it saw the team attempting to prove the truth about a Pearl Harbor veteran.

As a result of the shorter season, fans have been eager to know when the final episodes of the show will be released.

CBS has confirmed they will not be broadcast as part of season 17 but will instead be incorporated into season 18.

NCIS has been renewed for a groundbreaking 18th outing already and it is due to return in the autumn.

According to the network, the show will be back in its usual Tuesday evening time slot when it returns later this year.

An exact date has not been given but it is expected premiere in September, as this is when previous seasons have launched.

For instance, season 17 began airing on September 24, 2019 and season 16 on September 25, 2018.

The showrunners have also confirmed the original episode 21 of season 17 will be filmed as planned when they return to production.

Speaking to TV Line, Frank Cardea said: “Episode 21 was two days away from production.

“The sets are built and now locked up in our stages, the locations were pulled, the actors had been cast.

“That’s probably what we will shoot first [whenever production resumes].”

As well as this, Cardea confirmed they will be proceeding with episode 22 as planned as well.

This is because this marks the 400th episode of the CBS procedural and Cardea has revealed they plan to show it as episode two of season 18.

He also gave a hint about the original season 17 finale of the show, and what will happen to the intended conclusion.

Cardea told the publication: “The envisioned season finale did not have a cliffhanger ending but was planned to have a very surprising ending.

“More of a reveal/development, as you phrased it. We do plan to go forward with that episode in the early part of season 18, but will probably reevaluate the ending when the time comes.”

There has been no clear date revealed yet about when filming will resume for season 18.

However, it is expected to be back in action towards the end of the summer as lockdown eases in California.

NCIS season 18 is expected to air later in 2020.

Jeremy Clarkson confession: How Grand Tour star admitted ‘I refuse to watch Top Gear’

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Last November, Clarkson opened up about his departure from the BBC, The Grand Tour and what he thought about Top Gear under its news hosts. After he was sacked by the BBC as a result of an incident with a producer, Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond began plans for a new show. Meanwhile, Chris Evans became his successor, but would also leave the show after just one season.

This led to the arrival of former cricketer Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff and Paddy McGuinness as the new hosts of Top Gear.

As they were lauded for potentially saving the series, Clarkson maintained he wouldn’t watch in November 2019.

He said: “I wish them all the very best but I don’t watch it.

“It was my baby and then it got taken away and they’ve got it now.

“It’s like if you’ve got a baby and it’s put up for adoption you hope the baby’s brought up very well.”

The Grand Tour star said he was concentrating on his own show.

He continued: “There is no question that people prefer the specials when we whizz off and go and do something incredible, compared to the studio side of it.

“The other problem we have is time. Doing 12 or 13 shows a year is phenomenally time-consuming and it was sort of wiping us out, so now we can just concentrate on the specials and make them even better than they were.”

Clarkson also clashed with Evans when he took over the show in 2015.

In his Sun column, he said at the time: “I hope Chris enjoys running what, for the next couple of weeks, is the world’s biggest car show.”

Not only did Clarkson swipe at Evans, he also claimed that the BBC tried to get him back on the show after he had been sacked for an incident with one of the show’s producers.

He said: “I had a meeting with a BBC executive last week and they asked if I’d come back to Top Gear. Too much has gone on.

“After I’d been compared to Jimmy Savile by someone from the BBC and it was splashed all over a Sunday newspaper, how could I go back?

“The spotlight would have been on me and the show would end up being neutered. It would be difficult to do anything without interference. It would have been impossible to make the show I’d want to make.

“I think they knew this so that’s why they gave the job to Chris so soon after I met them.”

Evans responded to this with a feisty comeback of his own, claiming Clarkson may have voices in his head.

He said on his Radio 2 show: “Well, as to whether Jeremy was offered his old job back or not, either outside or inside his own head he still said no to the voices.

“Therefore, I shall continue my resurrection of the world’s favourite television car show.”

Steph McGovern was left wondering why her “friend was not talking to her” after a major mishap recently. The BBC Breakfast favourite was at a “work event” when her entrance didn’t quite go to plan.

You were just shaking you head and I thought, oh god, maybe she’s just gone all shy or something

Steph McGovern

Speaking on her podcast Not Bad For A Monday, she recalled the gaffe while speaking to her co-stars Geoff and Claire, who the story involved.

The 37-year-old revealed how it all came about after the latter opted for an “amazing” dress with a train on it.

The style of her frock led to Claire being speechless and Steph wondering what was going on at the bash.

When the story came up in the latest instalment of their series, the mother-of-one exclaimed: “This was brilliant!”

Steph did make sure to compliment her pal likening her to an A-list movie star before recalling her embarassment.

She started: “You had this bit attached to your dress, she honestly looked so like Reese Witherspoon.”

Getting back on track, the small screen regular commented: “So we walk in and there’s various cameras and everything, because it’s a TV event. And I’m like, ‘Claire, come on.’

“You were just shaking you head and I thought, oh god, maybe she’s just gone all shy or something. I go over and I’m like, ‘Claire man, what you doing?’

After Steph spoke to her about what was wrong, she quickly cleared up the matter.

The star continued: “She just pointed down at the floor and the woman holding the camera was just stood on the back of her dress. She couldn’t move!”

Claire explained: “I didn’t want to interrupt her because she was filming. I wanted to wait until she’d filmed her piece.

“I was like moving forward but not going anywhere. She was firmly on the dress.”

Later in the pre-recorded offering, Steph McGovern seemingly left her co-stars flabberghasted as she recalled a “weird” errand a former boss asked her to run.

Dominic Cummings: Prue Leith defends PM senior adviser after breaking lockdown ‘Well said’

The Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, 80, has defended Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s senior adviser Dominic Cummings, 48, after he reportedly decided to break the coronavirus lockdown rules to travel across the country to Durham to see his family. The Channel 4 star has called for some “kindness” amid the backlash.

How about a bit of kindness and tolerance?

Prue Leith

Since it was announced Mr Cummings drove to his parents’ house in Durham with his wife, Mary, and children at the start of April, when the lockdown rules had been imposed across the nation, there have been calls for Boris Johnson’s top aide to resign.

However, amid the political backlash, Mr Cummings has faced over the past couple of days, Prue took the opportunity to express her thoughts on the matter and seemingly agreed his journey to Durham was “necessary”.

The Great British Bake Off judge shared a tweet that read: “Dom and Mary’s journey was necessary and therefore within rules.

“What’s also necessary is not attacking a man and his family for decisions taken at a time of great stress and worry, the fear of death and concern for a child.”

Prue decided to share the message to her 45,000 Twitter followers and express her thoughts by adding: “Well said, Danny.

“How about a bit of kindness and tolerance?”

Once Prue had made it clear how she felt online, many followers waded in to express their concerns about Mr Cummings’ actions.

One wrote to the restauranteur: “Kindness & tolerance for who?

“Allowing the rich & influential to break the rules & be protected is the antithesis of decency.”

They continued: “Children are being buried alone & ordinary people are going through hell to maintain lockdown under far worse circumstances than Cummings.”

Another commented: “Urgh grim bit of privileged gaslighting here!

Tim Lovejoy shuts down Sunday Brunch guest over Dominic Cummings jibe: ‘Wrong channel’

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Tim Lovejoy, 52, was on hand to present the first studio edition of Sunday Brunch alongside co-host Simon Rimmer, 57, since production was shut down due to the coronavirus crisis. The stars of the show were joined by a few guests, who all adhered to social distancing measures in line with UK Government guidelines. With this being the first time some of the stars of today’s Channel 4 programme have felt some normality since lockdown measures started to ease, the subject was brought up in discussion. However, the presenter tried to move things along when comedian Tom, 36, mentioned Dominic Cummings’, 48, apparent breach of the rules.

The Prime Minister’s chief aide has come under huge scrutiny over the past few days after reports emerged Mr Cummings had made a trip from London to County Durham in April, which was a breach of the lockdown rules at the time.

According to the political strategist, he made the journey so he, his wife and son could be closer to other family members when his spouse started to display symptoms of Covid-19 at the end of March.

There have now been calls for him to resign from his position, although several Conservative MP’s have come to the defence of their colleague.

Discussing how nice it was to be back in the studio on today’s show, Tom made a joke about the topical matter which left Tim rather embarrassed, telling his guest he was on “the wrong channel.”

Speaking with the host about all things Bake Off: The Professionals which returns next week, the comedian said: “Isn’t it nice to be out and about?

“To be free to come to the studio today, oh I felt like Dominic Cummings,” he jibed, with Tim awkwardly laughing off the statement.

“It was so nice to be out and about,” the guest continued, to which the presenter then seemed to shut him down.

“The politics – this is the wrong channel for the politics,” the presenter remarked, with the comedian replying: “I know.”

“I just thought I’d show a bit of scope that I can do a bit of background reading,” Tom said as he justified his swipe.

The moment didn’t go unnoticed by those watching at home as a couple took to social media to comment on the jibe.

One viewer wrote on Twitter: “Excellent snipe from Tom Allen ‘felt like Dominic Cummings’.”

Whilst another added on the micro-blogging site: “Tom Allen on getting to come into the #SundayBrunch studio in person ‘ooh I felt like Dominic Cummings’.”

Game of Thrones: Expect White Walkers fate to be ‘DRASTICALLY different’ in ASOIAF books

With Game of Thrones having finished two books ahead of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, fans have been speculating over just how different The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring will be. Well, now a Game of Thrones expert reckons that the White Walkers’ fate will be “drastically different” in the remaining novels compared to the TV show. Fans will remember The Night King was slaughtered by Arya Stark, and so the whole army of White Walkers with him.

But did you know that in the books there is no Night King?

Yes, Bran Stark mentions how there was once a commander of the Night’s Watch called the Night’s King.

But we’re not talking the same character as in the TV show.

Now Insider’s Kim Renfro, author of The Unofficial Guide to Game of Thrones, has weighed in her prediction for the White Walkers in the remainder of Martin’s books.

  • Winds of Winter release date: George RR Martin drops MASSIVE hint?

The Game of Thrones expert pointed out how the Night King could exist later on in the books.

But also, that very little is known about them in the descriptions Martin has written.

She wrote: “So everything surrounding the final battle and the wight-dragon and a Valyrian steel/dragonglass blade being the key to killing the Night King?

“Probably just [Game of Thrones showrunners] Benioff and Weiss’ way of tidying up the White Walker threat in the version of the story they were telling.”

For all we know, the White Walkers will make it all the way to King’s Landing in A Dream of Spring.

Martin has confirmed Bran will be King at the end, but hopefully, there will be enough narrative differences from the show to keep it interesting for fans.

It’s even possible that The Winds of Winter will release this year.

After all, Martin has been writing every day in his remote mountain cabin during the lockdown.

And the 71-year-old author’s latest blog update may feature a teaser that The Winds of Winter’s release isn’t far off.

Martin’s post this weekend concerned his movie theatre, the Jean Cocteau Cinema in New Mexico, which has been closed since the lockdown began.

He wrote of how he’s kept his staff on, working virtually on the JCC YouTube channel.

And just before signing off, he cryptically teased: “We hope to keep adding content to the JCC… including new book events… once we reopen.”

So just what new book events followed by a “dot dot dot” could the author be teasing but The Winds of Winter’s release later this year?

Earlier during the lockdown he addressed his personal deadline of July, in time for WorldCon, New Zealand – which has since been cancelled for a virtual convention.

Martin wrote: “If there is a silver lining in these clouds, this will give me more time to finish WINDS OF WINTER.

“I continue to write every day, up here in my mountain fastness.”

Meghan and Harry Reportedly Gave Each Other the Sweetest Anniversary Gifts

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their second wedding anniversary earlier this week—on May 18, to be exact. Really, who could forget that magical day two years ago when they exchanged vows in front of basically the whole world?

A lot has changed since then, including the couple relocating to Markle’s hometown of Los Angeles with their one-year-old son, Archie. But gauging from their gifts to each other in celebration of the big day, their love certainly hasn’t. According to an Us Weekly source, the Duchess of Sussex gifted her husband with a very thoughtful present—and he did the same in return.

“Meghan designed Harry’s card, and hand-wrote a beautiful, sentimental message inside expressing her love for him,” the source said. “Harry surprised Meghan with a huge, stunning bouquet of roses and a ring, which she loves.” Now, unless they come out and tell us directly about their gifts (which, um, highly doubtful), we won’t ever know for certain. But we like the sound of these sweet presents. Plus, we know Prince Harry is very good at picking out rings for Markle. Just look at her engagement ring or that amazing aquamarine one she wore for their evening wedding reception, which he chose from Princess Diana’s collection of jewelry. And Markle’s handwriting is gorgeous from her days as a calligrapher, so that card was probably pretty major.

The couple reportedly spent their anniversary at home with Archie in L.A., where they have been working from home during the quarantine. “The day will simply be quality time with one another and as a family,” a source told Harper's Bazaar’s Omid Scobie. “They’re not going to be doing any work and made sure they have no meetings or calls in the diary.”

It sounds like a pretty nice day, all things considered. Hopefully when things are safe—and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are out and about again—we’ll get a good look at that new ring.

Susanna Reid: GMB host speaks out about Strictly 2020 rumours ‘It will be so sad’

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Susanna Reid, 49, has spoken out in response to speculation that the BBC show will be unable to present its beloved episode from Blackpool this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Good Morning Britain host, who finished as a runner-up in the eleventh series of Strictly with her partner Kevin Clifton in 2013, argued that cancelling the annual show at the famous Tower Ballroom would be “a significant blow” to the 2020 series.

Opening up about the situation in her MailOnline column, Susanna said: “Inevitable I suppose, but cancelling Blackpool would be a significant blow to Strictly Come Dancing.

“When you start out on the show, and reporters ask how you think you’ll get on, it’s almost illegal not to say ‘I just want to get to Blackpool’.”

The star went on to reflect on the moment she first entered the beautiful dance venue.

She recalled: “I’ll never forget the moment I was led, with my hands over my eyes, into the Tower Ballroom for the very first time.

“The ornate ceiling, velvet boxes, and the Wurlitzer organ that emerged from the depths of the ballroom floor took my breath away.”

Susanna then gushed: “My dance partner Kevin Clifton choreographed a dramatic paso to music from Bizet’s Carmen, and the audience response at the end registered 108.6 decibels.”

After pointing out the significance of the Blackpool episode for both the contestants and viewers, the journalist admitted: “It will be so sad if the home of ballroom doesn’t see a Strictly show this year.”

Susanna’s comments come after sources claimed that Strictly 2020 could go ahead this year without a studio audience, group performances or the legendary Blackpool week.

Any changes made to the series will take place if social distancing measures are still being enforced.

An insider told the Daily Star: “It will be a very different show this year.

“A lot of the things fans love have been dropped. Group dances and a studio audience just can’t happen with social distancing.

“Cancelling the Blackpool weekend was not an easy decision. But doing it in the current climate is too difficult. It isn’t worth doing if there won’t be a crowd.”

The dystopian series based on Margaret Atwood’s iconic novel has already offered a bleak glimpse at an alternative future. With season four of The Handmaid’s Tale coming back to Hulu soon, some fans have suggested June (played by Elisabeth Moss) will make even more shocking discoveries in the upcoming episodes.

New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale have currently been put on hold due to filming being interrupted by the outbreak of coronavirus.

With the lockdown postponing filming and post-production on major television dramas across the United States, now has been the perfect time to catch up on Hulu’s prestige series.

Adapting Margaret Atwood’s acclaimed novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale imagines an alternative world where the US has been taken over by an oppressive regime known as Gilead.

As the globe struggles against a fertility crisis, women who are able to carry children are forced into slavery and impregnated by their Commanders.

  • The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 theories: Agent Tuello to take over show

Former driver for Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) has struggled to justify his position in the regime, but was made a Commander himself at the beginning of season three.

Nick is the former lover of the series’ protagonist June, as well as the mother of her daughter, currently safe in Canada.

Devoted to keeping June safe, Nick has demonstrated he has more capacity for good than the majority of male characters throughout the series, especially when he struggles to come to terms with being given an incredibly young new wife in season two.

However, some fans have speculated Nick may have more to do with the foundation of Gilead than he lets on, as one viewer looked back to a key moment in the second season’s premiere.

They took to Reddit to propose Nick could have been behind the devastating attacks in Washington hinted at in a key flashback scene.

Redditor ApocCookbook posted: “June finds out that Nick was the gunman mentioned on the news during Season 2 Episode 1 (when she picked up Hannah from the hospital).”

A touching sequence in the season two premiere follows June pre-Gilead picking up her first daughter, Hannah, when she suffers a fever in school.

Seemingly a sweet moment of insight into June’s life before she became a handmaid, the flashback scene slowly begins to sow the seeds for the chaos about to take place.

Another fan added more fuel to the discussion and added: “I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I hate Nick. He’s the worst imo, and he helped to create Gilead, I don’t think he’ll want to take it down.”

Aside from his interior conflict throughout the series, not much is known about Nick or what his life was like before Gilead began its takeover of America.

Moreover, some fans were left disappointed by season three when Nick was given a reduced role, despite his promotion to Commander having major potential for more exciting conflict between him and June.

NCIS blunder: Fans spot glaring spelling mistake in key Ziva scene

Season 16 and 17 featured the surprise return of a fan favourite character to the CBS series. Although Ziva was confirmed to be alive and well in the latest instalments of NCIS, one of her most challenging cases may have been undermined by a critical spelling mistake.

The latest season of NCIS was forced to be put on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Remaining episodes of the thrilling Navy procedural are set to be rolled over to the beginning of season 18, which is hoped to start production later this year.

Meanwhile, fans were nevertheless impressed by the makeshift finale of season 17, in which guest star Christopher Lloyd portrayed a Pearl Harbor veteran.

The latest episode was praised as a touching elegy to the lives lost during the Second World War, though devoted viewers are still anxious to see the events of the new series unfold.

Theories are already circulating about the changing roles of the core cast, specifically the NCIS team’s long standing leader, Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon).

With the reappearance of fan favourite character Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) fans have been discussing the possibility of the Agent taking over Gibbs as team leader.

Ziva returned in the season 16 finale and also reprised her role for the premiere of season 17, after the series revealed she had survived the mortar attack in season 11.

With the character making her safe return to the popular show, viewers have been looking back at classic Ziva episodes with unexpected results.

Rewatching one particular episode back in season four revealed a key scene came close to being sabotaged by a noticeable background blunder.

In episode 11, In the Dark, the team are discussing the death of David Wong (Roger Lim), who appears to have hanged himself.

However, one fan spotted: “On the message board visible in the background when the team is discussing Wong, the word ‘Artillery’ is misspelled ‘Artillary’.”

During the pinnacle scene, Ducky (David McCallum) examines David Wong’s body, and confirms the inverted V-shaped mark combined with the haemorrhaging of the lips and eyelids and fractured cervical vertebrae indicates the victim hanged himself.

It’s not confirmed who wrote the word on the board, though given most of the team frequently work with heavy duty weaponry this misspelling is particularly embarrassing.

Thankfully, the mistake went unnoticed by most fans and In the Dark remains a classic episode of Ziva David’s original tenure of the show.

During a 2016 interview with Vanity Fair, Cote de Pablo revealed she left the series because Ziva was not getting the “respect” she deserved.

“They were going to send her back to Israel and make her an unfortunate, miserable woman.”

Thankfully her appearances in season 16 and 17 have revitalised the character, and the current media landscape is a lot more open to Ziva and other female characters leading action-heavy shows like NCIS.

If Ziva does make another comeback for season 18, Cote de Pablo would be a welcome addition to NCIS’s current roster of Field Agents and forensic specialists.

NCIS season 18 is hoped to return later in 2020 on CBS.
