After Marvel’s biggest and baddest villain Thanos (Josh Brolin) was defeated by Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers Endgame, the warriors entered a time of peace. Captain America (Chris Evans) was tasked with returning the Infinity Stones to their rightful timelines – but he had other plans up his sleeve. Instead of returning once his mission was over Steve Rogers stayed in the past and built a life with his long-lost love, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

However wonderful this was to watch, it was a little confusing for viewers when they realised none of Steve’s friends knew about Cap’s plan.

What’s more, just before Cap left, he gave his iconic shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), metaphorically and literally passing the mantle of Captain America over to him.

In the latest episode of Disney Plus TV show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky (Sebastian Stan) spoke about this scene in particular.

During it, Bucky also confirmed he knew about Steve’s plan all along.

While discussing the gravity of Cap passing the shield on to him, Sam said: “The legacy of that shield is complicated, to say the least.”

Bucky replied: “When Steve told me what he was planning, I don’t think we understood what it felt like for a Black man to be handed the shield.

“How could we? I owe you an apology. I’m sorry.” Sam said: “Thank you.”

This brief exchange confirms that Avengers Endgame planned out the thinking behind Steve’s exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The scene also revealed why Steve and Bucky didn’t say anything to one another in the final moments of the film.

While it is unclear whether this particular moment was scripted or shot, it does confirm the writers at Marvel, under the guidance of Kevin Feige, had thought about what was going on behind the scenes.

It also confirms more things could have been said between Captain America and Bucky that fans are not privy to – yet.

In the end, Cap got his wish, as the final moments of episode five of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed Sam coming to terms with becoming the next Captain America.

Sam was shown opening an armoured briefcase with his new super suit in it.

Bucky was the one who gave him the new armour and explained how the advanced scientists in Wakanda created it for him.

With the final episode of the season airing next week, fans will surely be introduced to the new and improved Sam Wilson Captain America for the first time in a new suit while wielding the iconic shield.

Mackie spoke candidly about taking on the mantle earlier this year.

Mackie said: “The show is very honest and forthright and very unapologetic about dealing with the truth of what it means to be American, Captain America, Black Captain America – and if that’s even a thing.

“I think picking up from where we left off at the end of Endgame, the show progresses extremely well by asking those questions and really explaining why Sam said the shield feels like it belongs to someone else.”

The star added that he doesn’t believe there is a “de facto Captain America figure”.

He added: “I think the more important thing is, how do we now define the Falcon and the Winter Soldier?”
