Barbara Windsor's husband says moving her to care home 'feels like bereavement'

Dame Barbara Windsor’s husband Scott Mitchell has said that moving the EastEnders legend to a care home ‘feels like a bereavement’.

Scott, who has been married to the Peggy Mitchell actress for 20 years, explained this week that he has taken the decision to move her into full time residential care amid her dementia battle.

However, the move has clearly hit him hard, with him explaining: ‘I feel I’m on an emotional rollercoaster.

‘I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst in to tears. It feels like a bereavement.’

Scott pointed out that it’s taking Barbara a little while to settle in, adding to The Sun: ‘Right now she still occasionally gets cross with me and wants to come home.

‘But that’s the illness and, however painful it is for me to accept it, I don’t regret the decision. I know this needed to happen for Barbara’s wellbeing.’

Barbara, 82, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s six years ago, with the news being made public back in 2018.

She and Scott, 57, have been campaigning for better care for dementia patients ever since, with the pair being appointed ambassadors for the Alzheimer’s Society last year.

More recently, Ross Kemp, who played Barbara’s on-screen son Grant Mitchell in EastEnders, has been giving fans an insight into her battle with the illness in his documentary Living Of Dementia.

Scott spoke to Ross when he was considering moving Barbara into a care home, telling the actor: ‘He’s [a healthcare professional] basically telling me I need to prepare myself that at some point it might not be sustainable to give her the level of care she needs at the house.

‘It’s the thing I’ve always feared. I’ve had some fairly dark moments since he said that because there’s a part of me that that is most likely the truth and that needs to happen, and there’s another part of me which can’t imagine letting her go.’
