Celebs Who Quietly Broke Up During The Pandemic
The coronavirus pandemic affected people across the globe, forcing many a couple apart and others closer together than ever. Many famous faces have revealed how quarantining together actually strengthened their relationship, including Lady Gaga and her entrepreneur boyfriend, Michael Polanksy, who revealed that they’d locked down together shortly after Gaga made their romance Instagram official in February 2020.
“Day 6 of self-quarantining! Going strong, playing video games and cards, and taking care of ourselves. Important reminder: keep your mind as stress free as possible and your body moving,” Gaga captioned an Instagram selfie of them together. “It’s ok and so wonderful to stay home if you can! What a kind act for the world,” she added.
Country star Carrie Underwood and her husband, retired hockey player Mike Fisher, also shared how quarantining together brought them closer. “We were a couple [of] months in and had been very much in quarantine just with each other for a while. He said, ‘You know what? I like you,'” Underwood told Yahoo Entertainment in October 2020. “I was like: ‘What does that mean? You like me?’ He was like, ‘I know I love you, we’ve been married 10 years this year and have two kids together, but this experience has showed me I like you, too,” she recalled, admitting she told her husband, “‘I like you too.'”
Unfortunately, not every star pairing had the same experience. Read on to find out which couples quietly went their separate ways during the pandemic.
Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson split after six months
Bill Hader and Rachel Bilson’s relationship didn’t make it through the pandemic. The “Saturday Night Live” comedian and former “The O.C.” and “Hart of Dixie” actor dated for around six months in 2020, but didn’t make it through the summer together. In January 2020, they went public with their romance when they walked the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards together (via People), but it was a different story in July 2020 at the height of the pandemic.
Despite making things public with their award show appearance, the two kept things very low-profile when it came to their split and never publicly acknowledged that they’d gone their separate ways, even via their reps. However, a number of sources claimed to People that their breakup was official and amicable.
Just five months earlier, People gave an insight into their relationship, with a source telling the tab that the pair “enjoyed a getaway to the Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach” for Valentine’s Day. “They spend a lot of time together and it seems like a serious relationship,” the source continued, adding,”[Rachel] won’t stop laughing when she’s with Bill. He is very sweet and considerate to her.” Sadly, it looks like this one just wasn’t meant to be.
Dianna Agron quietly divorced Winston Marshall
Former “Glee” star Dianna Agron and former Mumford and Sons band member Winston Marshall were never ones to shout about their relationship. Their romance was kept super hush from beginning to end as the two barely spoke about one another in interviews and rarely appeared on each other’s social media accounts. Despite Agron keeping her Instagram account stocked full of fun photos of her life, she never even confirmed she’d tied the knot. Her rep, however, confirmed to Us Weekly in October 2016 that Agron and Marshall wed in Morocco.
Four years later, the same outlet exclusively reported in August 2020 that Agron and Marshall had gone their separate ways. The tab claimed that the two had been “living apart” for a while and noted that the actor had already moved on. A source claimed the “I Am Number Four” star was already dating again.
But it seems like this wasn’t a bad breakup. The outlet noted that the two, who barely ever acknowledged each other on social media, still followed each other on Instagram. However, as of April 2021, that’s not the case. While Agron still follows Marshall, he appears to have clicked the unfollow button on his ex and only follows one account, the non-profit organization, Hong Kong Link Up.
Noah Centineo and Alexis Ren deleted their Instagram posts about each other
Noah Centineo didn’t make a big deal out of his split with Alexis Ren. The “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” actor and the Instagram model made undoubtedly one of the best looking couples in the world when Us Weekly confirmed in September 2019 that the genetically blessed twosome were an item.
It wasn’t until a few months later in January 2020 that Centineo actually made things Instagram official with his now former love. He posted a photo of them together to his grid, which has since been deleted. “My dad says I look like I just finished a fight with [Conor McGregor] and lost. I say, at least one of us in this photo is gorgeous,” he captioned it (per Us Weekly) with a red heart emoji, adding, “Love you baby.”
However, the two just couldn’t go the distance during the tough times of the pandemic — but didn’t put such a spotlight on their split. Centineo and Ren quietly went their separate ways without many fans even noticing, though some social media users grew suspicious after noticing the couple (or ex-couple) had unfollowed each other on Instagram in March 2020. Ever the sign of a split in modern times, a source confirmed to Us Weekly a month later that they actually broke up “a few weeks” prior as the pandemic first took hold.
Jonah Hill and Gianna Santos kept their breakup during the pandemic on the down low
Jonah Hill and Gianna Santos are another couple who didn’t exactly shout the split from the rooftops, despite being engaged for around a year. The “21 Jump Street” and “Superbad” star was only photographed with beauty brand content manager a handful of times throughout their relationship, so it’s probably no surprise their breakup was kept on the down low. Neither has spoken publicly about going their separate ways, though their rep confirmed the news to People in October 2020.
The exes were first romantically linked in August 2018, and Hill popped the question to Santos just over a year later in September 2019 (via People). After the news of their split became public knowledge, Hill ignored all the breakup chatter on Instagram, but certainly didn’t seem like he was sitting around drowning in his sorrows. In the months since the engagement was called off, Hill has posted shots of himself loved up with what appears to be a rescue pup, surfing, and working on a new directorial project.
Jennifer Garner and John Miller's split was as secret as their relationship
Jennifer Garner wasn’t exactly out in the spotlight with her former boyfriend, John Miller. The mom of three kept her relationship very quiet for almost two years, and she followed suit when it came to their breakup. ET reported that the two were no longer together, revealing that the couple managed to keep things so quiet that the world didn’t find out they’d broken up for a few months.
“Jen and John called it quits several months ago,” the source told the outlet in August 2020. While many former couples vow to stay on friendly terms after a breakup, it sounds like Garner and Miller actually managed it. “They’ve remained friends,” the insider claimed, explaining that the couple split because their relationship started to fizzle out and they decided it was better to end things when they started to see “less and less of each other.”
The “13 Going on 30” actor reportedly started dating the businessman in October 2018 in the wake of her divorce from Ben Affleck, with whom she shares her three children. A source confirmed the news to ET, with the insider claiming that Garner didn’t find it “easy at first” to start dating again and supposedly “had to push herself” to get back out there. They added, “When she finally did step into that world, she kept that part of her life very private.” We’ll say!
Ashley Benson and Cara Delevingne were hit with cheating allegations
Ashley Benson and Cara Delevingne’s relationship had fans swooning during their two years of dating. The two were regularly spotted by the paparazzi, out and about on dates and having fun, but things seemed to fizzle when much of the world locked down due to the coronavirus pandemic. Citing multiple sources, People confirmed Benson and Delevingne had gone their separate ways in May 2020, but the model and the former “Pretty Little Liars” actor actually managed to keep things quiet for several weeks before the news was made public. According to the outlet, it was actually in “early April” 2020 when they called it quits.
The outlet noted that Delevingne in particular had been leaning on her friends while spending an increased amount of time at home. The site reported that the British star had been “self-quarantining” and “spending time with friends including Margaret Qualley and her sister Rainey Qualley, as well as Kaia Gerber,” the daughter of Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber.
In a rare acknowledgement of the split, Delevingne publicly defended her ex via Instagram Story in May 2020. Per Stylist, fans on social media began to speculate that Benson may have cheated on Delevingne, to which the latter hit back, “It’s more important than ever to spread love, not hate. To everyone hating on @ashleybenson, please stop. You don’t know the truth, only her and I do and that’s exactly how it should be.”
Danica Patrick and Aaron Rodgers both moved on quickly
Danica Patrick and Aaron Rodgers seemed to be total couple goals during their two-year romance, and the former race car driver and NFL star even quarantined together amid the coronavirus outbreak (per People) — but they didn’t make it to the end of the pandemic. Both, in fact, came out the other side with other partners. Rodgers announced he was engaged to Shailene Woodley in February 2021, while Patrick gushed about her new romance with her boyfriend, businessman Carter Comstock, in April 2021.
People reported that Patrick and Rodgers had gone their separate ways in July 2020 with their reps confirming the news. Fans had grown suspicious that the two were no longer together after noticing that Patrick had unfollowed the quarterback on social media. Though they weren’t afraid to put their relationship on display on social media throughout their relationship, they never got too public about their split.
However, Patrick did appear to hint at her breakup with Rodgers when she opened up about experiencing heartbreak during an episode of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls” which aired in April 2021, though she did not mention the sportsman by name.
Olivia Munn and Tucker Roberts split shortly after going Instagram official
Actor Olivia Munn and businessman Tucker Roberts dated for more than a year before they called it quits. The exes managed to keep their split under the radar for a long time before it hit the news. Reps for Munn and Roberts confirmed that they’d gone their separate ways in August 2020, with a source claiming to Us Weekly that Munn and Tucker’s breakup had actually happened months earlier, though neither appears to have publicly addressed it.
They never exactly shouted their romance from the rooftops, but didn’t seem to be afraid to make it known they were dating, either. Per Us Weekly, Munn made their romance Instagram official in November 2019 when she shared an adorable photo showing the couple’s costume they donned for Halloween. “Happy Halloween from Judy & Jesse Gemstone,” she captioned the snap, which has since been deleted.
A source claimed they attended the Bea Åkerlund and Miranda Dickson A Day of the Dead Celebration on November 2, 2019, where they let other attendees know they were very much a couple. The two supposedly “arrived together holding hands and were visibly together.”
Karamo Brown and Ian Jordan's pandemic-postponed wedding became permanently canceled
Unfortunately for Karamo Brown and Ian Jordan, the pandemic did more than just bump the dates on their Save The Dates. During a September 2020 appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” the “Queer Eye” star opened up about how lockdown led to much more than just cabin fever for the couple.
“[The wedding] was postponed because of the pandemic, but now it’s actually postponed officially, because my fiancé and I, we were together for 10 years, and we broke up about three and a half months ago,” Brown told DeGeneres’ guest host, dancer Stephen “tWitch” Boss. “We were distracted by so much, with the kids and our careers, that during that time, I had to really say, ‘How is our communication? How is other parts of our lives? Are we growing in the same place?'”
He also shared a few more details of their breakup, claiming there was no infidelity, and that they remain friends after completing some “virtual counseling” together. “We’re not 20 anymore, so it wasn’t just, ‘Oh, I’m not going to text you anymore’ — it was like, we have a family and a home. How do we separate this? And it was hard,” Brown said, adding, “But eventually I was like, this is a moment where I need to decide, is my happiness important? And once I made that decision, I said, you know, we are going to have to break up.”
Sienna Miller and Lucas Zwirner reportedly ended their engagement over their age gap
It was also splitsville for Sienna Miller and Lucas Zwirner in the middle of the pandemic. In traditional Miller style, she kept their breakup as private as their romance, with a source sharing the breakup news with Page Six in September 2020. Though they never officially confirmed it, it was reported that the two were engaged after Zwirner asked the British actor to marry him in January 2020.
However, it seemed the couple’s age gap was what caused a wedge between them. A source claimed to Us Weekly that the two had “hit a rough patch in their relationship” and claimed that Zwirner was supposedly “a bit immature for Sienna.” Notably, the two had a nine-year age gap, with Miller being 38 at the time of their split, while Zwirner was 29.
But it sounds like the “American Sniper” actor wasn’t too sad about the split as the world was sent into disarray. Us Weekly’s insider claimed she wasn’t feeling “torn up about the breakup” and had “been spending time with her sister.” They added Miller was supposedly also “focused on her daughter, Marlowe, and taking care of her and homeschooling her,” adding that she had “been enjoying all the time she has with her daughter.”
Jaime King and Kyle Newman's 12-year marriage ended with some serious allegations
Jaime King and Kyle Newman’s marriage couldn’t outlast the pandemic. In May 2020, People reported that King filed to end her 12-year marriage to filmmaker Newman and claimed she’d also “filed a domestic violence prevention petition” against her estranged husband, though representatives for both did not comment at the time.
Things seemed to be far from amicable in the months that followed. In November 2020, Newman filed for sole physical custody of their two sons (via People) as he claimed to have “been the children’s primary caretaker since their birth” in legal documents. He also stated that the children had “spent the large majority of 2020 in my sole custody.” However, a representative for King hit back and accused Newman of deception.
“[Newman’s] lawyers have filed selectively redacted documents which perpetuate a false narrative about [King]. [King’s] utmost priority has been the well-being of her children and she will continue to pursue this privately for their sake,” a representative for King said. The rep added that the “White Chicks” actor “looks forward to harmonious co-parenting of the boys when everyone is back home in Los Angeles.”
In February 2021, Newman welcomed a baby boy with his girlfriend, Cynthia “Cyn” Nabozny.
Caterina Scorsone and Rob Giles ended their decade-long marriage during the pandemic
Another long marriage that didn’t make it through the pandemic was “Grey’s Anatomy” star Caterina Scorsone’s decade-long marriage to musician Rob Giles. People reported that the two split in May 2020, with a rep confirming the news in a statement. “Caterina and Rob have separated. They remain friends and are committed to co-parenting their children in a spirit of love,” it read. Neither have publicly spoken out about the breakup personally, though Scorsone did share a poem about “joy” mere hours after the news of her divorce hit the headlines.
The star shared the uplifting message (per People) written by Morgan Harper Nichols to her social media on May 9, 2020. It read, “Cling to joy. Bold audacious joy, that looks for Light in everything. Even when you’re waiting.” In December 2020, Variety reported that the former couple listed the Los Angeles home they shared together for $2.4 million.
Brad Pitt and Nicole Poturalski split a while before the news became public
It’s hard to believe someone as famous as Brad Pitt kept any details about a relationship private, but that’s exactly what happened in October 2020. A source confirmed that Pitt had gone his separate ways with model Nicole Poturalski, and it turned out it actually took a while to hit the headlines. Us Weekly reported the breakup, citing a source who claimed the two had “been over for a while now.” The insider also dished a little on their romance, claiming their relationship was only “short-lived” and they were “never too serious.”
It was only two months earlier that Us Weekly first reported that the two were dating, despite them first being seen together in November 2019. But while it appeared to only be a brief romance, they weren’t afraid to travel together. The site claimed Pitt and Poturalski’s relationship was outed in August 2020 after they were spotted together at an airport in France when they travelled to the “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” actor’s home in the South of France.
As for how things were kept on the down low, a source claimed when the dating news was confirmed that it was “a go-with-the-flow situation” and noted that “Nicole’s not running around yelling about her love for Brad from the rooftops.”
Ryan Seacrest and Shayna Taylor broke up for the third time
As fans will know, it’s not been easy to keep up with the comings and goings of Ryan Seacrest and his on/off girlfriend, Shayna Taylor. The two quietly split for the third (and seemingly final) time amid the coronavirus pandemic when People reported in June 2020 that they’d gone their separate ways once again. The outlet cited a source who claimed the longtime “American Idol” host and the model had “decided to end their romantic relationship amicably” and shared that it happened “some time ago.”
But it sounds like the on/off duo managed to keep things amicable, as the insider added, “They remain good friends, each other’s biggest supporters and will always cherish their time together as a couple.” They also suggested Seacrest had already moved on from Taylor and claimed at the time the breakup news hit the headlines that he was on vacation in Mexico with a group of friends and a new love interest.
Seacrest and Taylor first met in 2013 but split around a year later. They then got back together and moved things to the next level in May 2017 when they moved in together, but called things off again in February 2019. However, the second split didn’t last too long. They were back together by September 2019, until their seemingly last breakup in the summer of 2020. But with these two, it seems like anything’s possible when it comes to a reconciliation!
