Channel 4 will hope the former ‘Little Britain’ star, 46, will breathe new life into ‘Bake Off’ after difficulties to recreate its former success. Last year, the show lost more than half a million viewers during the finale that crowned David Atherton winner. Noel Fielding will now be partnered with the comedian in a new double act after Toksvig, 62, decided it was time to move on in January. While the former duo – who replaced the BBC’s Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins – remain friends outside the show, the QI host revealed her brutal first thoughts about Fielding.

Toksvig’s disclosure came during their participation in the ‘BFF (Best Friends Forever) game’, where pals try to match answers during a quiz about each other.

Before it began, the duo revealed that part of their ‘Bake Off’ success might lie in their individual flaws – which they felt the other made-up for.

Toksvig admitted that she doesn’t watch TV so “didn’t know the show” but understood how to be a presenter, meanwhile Fielding was the opposite.

On screen their relationship appeared to flourish with cheeky skits at the beginning of each episode – including one where they played badminton with someone dressed as a gorilla.

But when asked their first impressions of each other, Toksvig disclosed her brutally honest verdict during the 2018 BuzzFeed interview.

When it began the first question that flashed on screen read: “What did you think when you first met each other?”

Fielding revealed his answer was “true love”, written in a decorative calligraphy next to a sketch of a heart with eyes, arms and legs.

But Toksvig, who had gone in for the kill with her answer, appeared shocked by her co-host’s response and exclaimed: “Oh!”

She appeared to show slight signs of guilt as she read out: “I put empty headed but charming.”

While the duo laughed, Toksvig frowned awkwardly – in a possible admission of guilt over her response – and later in other questions spied on her co-star’s answers before she wrote her own.

In an attempt to defuse the moment, Fielding continued to smirk and quipped: “Best compliment I’ve ever had.”

While the duo did manage to guess some of the same answers, they made mistakes in a number of other rounds.

In one answer, Toksvig thought the theme for Fielding’s fancy dress party of choice would be ABBA – only for him to reveal it was “Gothic”.

Fielding also revealed that his top “pet peeve” was “press” during the interview, although he conceded that Toksvig’s answer wasn’t far off.

She flashed her card, which read: “Being called too early.”

Fielding said: “Yes, I do not like getting up in the morning. I am a vampire , so you know, I like to sleep during the day.”

In response to the question “Who is most likely to fluff their lines?” they both laughed and Fielding groaned as he scribbled on his card.

He wrote “ME” in giant letters that filled the A3 sheet of paper and Toksvig also penned “Noel” with an arrow that pointed towards him.

Shortly after, she quipped: “What I love is, when you do get it all right the whole crew spontaneously applauds.”

‘The Great British Bake Off’ airs at 8PM tonight on Channel 4.
