How this couple, both 25, saved their way to a two-bed house in a dream village
Rather than spending their salaries on rent and expensive holidays, trainee solicitor Megan Tiddy and Dave Greensmith, a technician in football, made up their minds that when they left university they would prioritise saving every penny towards a deposit on a home.
For this reason, they chose to move back in with their parents — Dave to his family home in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and Megan to her mum and dad’s thatched cottage half an hour away in Ickford Village.
‘We knew it would be hard, but we wanted to save until we had enough to buy, rather than having to rent,’ says Megan.
In the end they were able to bring forward their plans and start their new life together sooner than expected when Megan received an inheritance after her grandmother died.
When finished, The Grove will consist of 280 two, three and four-bed houses with well-proportioned rooms, fully-fitted kitchens complete with integrated appliances, off-road or allocated parking and turfed gardens.
Twenty three acres of public open space run through the development, which will include a cricket pitch and a pond, and Haddenham & Thame Parkway station is only two miles away. The latest phase has sold out, but the final homes go on sale late spring or early summer of this year.
Can’t wait? Then take a look at St Michael’s Park in Stewkley, a pretty village in the Aylesbury Vale where three and four-bed houses with good-sized gardens start from £410,000.

Alongside their savings, this enabled them to put down a 10% deposit on a two-bed house at Dandara’s The Grove development in the picturesque village of Haddenham.
The couple, both 25, had been interested in a home in another part of Aylesbury, but the seller couldn’t find anywhere to buy and the process ground to a halt.
‘It was just taking too long to go through,’ continues Megan. ‘We started to look around again and when we found Haddenham we liked the area and loved the feel of The Grove. It didn’t feel closed-in like so many new developments we have looked at but was really airy and spacious.’
Do the maths
For a three-bed house at St Michael’s Park, available now:
Purchase price: £410,000
15 per cent deposit: £61,500
Mortgage: Approximately £1,400pcm
Estate charge: Approximately £22pcm

Another reason they picked their home was because of its green space. ‘The garden is amazing for a two-bedroom house — it’s massive, private and even has a lovely tree,’ says Megan.
Now settled in, she and Dave have developed a love of gardening and formed firm friendships with their neighbours. ‘The Grove has a lovely community feel and everyone has been so welcoming,’ she says.
‘Receiving the inheritance made all the difference, and I’m so grateful.’
