Season three of Mirzapur has been confirmed by Amazon Prime Video after the drama became the most watched the show on the platform in India. The renewal came only a few weeks after season two arrived on the streaming service with audiences quickly lapping up the new episodes. Nonetheless, some fans are eager to know why actor Vikrant Massey departed the series after just one series.
Why did Vikrant Massey leave Mirzapur?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Mirzapur seasons 1 and 2
Season one saw the brutal murder of Bablu Pandit (played by Vikrant Massey) at the hands of Munna Tripathi (Divyenndu), who was desperate to win his father’s approval.
Munna unexpectedly turned up at a wedding and along with his men butchered most of the guests there, including Bablu and Sweety Gupta (Shriya Pilgaonkar).
Bablu begged for his life and hoped Munna would spare him but the heir to the throne of Mirzapur took no prisoners.
He also tried to murder Guddu Pandit (Ali Fazal) but luckily, he fled the scene, despite being grief-stricken at the horrific killing of his brother in front of him.
The latest series was very much about Guddu exacting his revenge on Munna and the rest of the Tripathis for their crimes against his family.
Thankfully, Guddu managed to have his revenge and killed Munna in a scene mirroring Bablu’s untimely demise.
Speaking to India Today back in 2018, actor Massey said: “Honestly, when I started shooting for the web series, I wasn’t informed about my character’s death.”
Massey went on to say: “I came to know about it after shooting for 15 days.
“I was a little taken aback. It was well-written character and I wouldn’t have backed out, but I had no clue about this.”
The actor’s words suggest Bablu’s death was very much a choice by the writers to shock the audience.
From the looks of it, it seems Massey may have been keen to stay on in Mirzapur given he was a major character alongside Fazal.
Bablu’s death was necessary to propel the story forward and lead Guddu to take revenge against the Tripathis.
But the star was pragmatic about Bablu’s death, telling Scroll.in in 2018: “I hadn’t expected it at all – also because I wasn’t told about it at the conceptualising stage.”
The star added: “Anyway, I am happy that people have lapped onto Bablu.”
Massey revealed he did a bit of research for the role of Bablu which was his first big action project.
He went to Uttar Pradesh, where the real Mirzapur region is situated in a bid to understand the social fabric of the area.
The actor said he spoke to many people in the Poorvanchal belt, where the show is set, to get into the mindset needed for Bablu.

He explained: “I wanted to understand the aspirations of the place, the dejections and priorities of the people, their thought processes.”
However, he also admitted there were similarities between himself and Bablu due to their shared academic tendencies.
Massey said: “He is someone who is academically inclined and doesn’t really belong to the hinterland. He wanted to go to Lucknow and become a civil servant.
“He is one breath of an alternative narrative in that show. He is probably the conscience of the audience.”
