Rachel Riley, 35, was once again on hand to present Countdown with her co-stars, Nick Hewer, 77, and Susie Dent, 56, on Wednesday afternoon. As usual, the expectant mother revealed several consonants and vowels the contestants had to use to come up with a number of words to score as many points as possible. However, what the presenter of the Channel 4 programme wasn’t expecting was one of the participants to offer up a mild expletive, leaving her smirking in the corner.
Once the clock had ground to a halt, departing host Nick asked the contestants to share the words they had come up with.
Steve – who had six possible contenders – put forward ‘braced’, while Ant – who had seven possible contenders put feared ‘cr****d’.
He asked Susie if the rude word would be allowed and the lexicographer confirmed it could as it had another, more conventional meaning.
“To crap out in a game of Craps – a dice gambling game – to make a losing throw is absolutely fine,” she explained.
However, over in the corner where Rachel was standing, she was speechless and had a smile on her face as she’d spelt out the word on the board.
Shortly after, the game resumed and the contestants put forward some more conventional terms to get their points up.
This episode is one of the last Rachel will feature in with both Susie and Nick also presenting alongside her.
The latter will be stepping down from his role as host in the coming weeks and he will be replaced by Anne Robinson, 76.
It was announced earlier this year the former Weakest Link host would be taking over and making history by leading the first all-female line-up.
It’s been very lively
Earlier this week, the programme revealed the first picture of the three female presenters at the helm.
It’s not yet been announced when Anne’s first episode as host will air but it is expected to broadcast towards the latter end of the year.
Commenting on the new host, Rachel said: “It’s been really fun watching Anne very quickly find her feet in the Countdown studio and seeing the contestants in the new groove with her.
“She’s not shy of asking them funny questions and the responses have ranged from going into their own comedy routines to not looking directly at her and hoping she doesn’t see them.”
“It’s been very lively,” the expectant mother said, who is filming her last episodes before going on maternity leave in the foreseeable future.
Susie also gave her take on Anne’s debut, explaining: “I’m so pleased to be able to work with Anne again.
“She has been a heroine of mine ever since she gently rescued me from an embarrassing moment on my first bit of live TV.
“With her flair and wit, she’s going to be a wonderful addition to the Countdown team,” the lexicographer added.
Speaking of joining the team, Anne said: “The thing is that, Susie and Rachel are very clever, very young, very pretty and much thinner than me.
“I love anagrams, I do the Times crossword every day. I’m not very good at adding up or subtracting,” the new quiz show host remarked on Steph’s Packed Lunch.
“I’ll tell you what’s great about this show is that it’s very clever contestants who have to work at speed, I think that’s what’s impressive about it.”
It’s not yet been announced when Nick’s last episode will broadcast before handing over the reins to his successor.
Countdown airs weekdays at 2:15pm on Channel 4.
