On Tuesday afternoon, Countdown host Nick Hewer returned alongside Susie Dent and Rachel Riley for another episode of the Channel 4 quiz show ahead of his exit later this year. And battling it out in the contestants’ chairs was reigning champion Dave and challenger Thomas, while Susie was joined in Dictionary Corner by BBC wildlife presenter Chris Packham. But while the quizzing between the two made for entertaining viewing, the most talked-about moment from the instalment was undoubtedly when Susie was left grimacing after Chris had brought in some bear poo for her to smell.
Chris’ faecal talking point came after he tried to enlighten the Channel 4 line-up with the ins and outs of the rather grim side of human beings and nature’s digestion system.
Chris kicked off the discussion: “Humans, one thing we find repugnant is a group of chemicals called thiols which are very typically produced in food.
“And if we’ve been eating very sulphurous foods for instance, then they can make our faces smell pretty rank.”
The Countryfile frontman then reached down below his desk as Countdown stars Susie and Nick watched in with rather nervous looks on their faces.
“But these are dried,” Chris added as he brought to his desk a white container. “I thought I’d bring along some fresh stuff.”
As he lifted the lid on the container, he then revealed he was going to rope Susie into his bizarre demonstration.
“Susie can catch a little whiff of this,” Chris said as he took a sniff from the container, prompting nervous laughter from the lexicologist.
“Excuse me,” Chris said after grimacing at the smell before sliding over the tub for Susie to get involved
In almost disbelief at what Chris was asking of her, she chimed in: “You actually want me to smell it.”
“Don’t go too hard on that one,” Chris added before teasing: “See if you can guess what that is.”
Susie apprehensively lifted the container to her nose before turning away in disgust: “Urgh!”
But despite being grossed out, Susie tried to keep her cool and play along with the guessing game.

Giving her a clue, Chris hinted at what creatures could have produced the faecal matter.
“Okay, it’s no longer present in the UK, you find them across Europe and in northern parts of America,
“Although having said that there are other species of it in other parts of the world,” he said.
“Sometimes they’re grizzly, sometimes they’re black, sometimes they’re brown,” Chris added, prompting Susie to answer: “Bears.”
“It’s bear poo, fresh bear poo,” Chris added before Susie commented on how “strong” the scent was.
The wildlife presenter then delved into the details as to exactly why the faeces emitted such a strong stench.
Back to the actual competition at hand, it was Thomas who bested reigning champion, Dave, by 81-68.
Dave went home with the famous teapot while Thomas will return to face a new challenger tomorrow.
Countdown continues weekdays at 2:10pm on Channel 4.
