Viewers of ITV’s The Chase saw the blunder unfold as Shaun Wallace, also known on The Chase as the Dark Destroyer, made a low offer that changed before their eyes. The offer somehow lowered further from £1,000 to -£3,000. The top offer also changed from £40,000 to £51,000. Thankfully, contestant Emma had chosen the middle offer, but the strange mishap was noticed by fans.
Watching Shaun make the offers, host Bradley Walsh said: “Let’s put some money on the table. £6,000 very good, low offer please.”
“You won’t go for this,” Shaun commented to Emma. “£1,000.” The figure appeared as normal on the table.
“But it’s a plus amount for player three. High offer please,” Bradley continued.
Shaun offered a whopping £40,000 to Emma, who had put on a decent performance in her cash building round.
“Have a chat to the team,” Bradley advised. Turning to the others, he asked: “Daniel what do you say?”
“You did fantastic there,” Daniel began. “That top offer is tempting but we’ve got the foundations for a good team, go middle or low, do what you think is right.”
Suzanne agreed, adding: “That was a cracking cash build-up but yes I would stick to the middle and let’s get us all back.”
Calum echoed the other two players’ view, advising Emma not to take the high offer.
He said: “Great job Emma, you know what I’m going to say – you can take the £6,000. You can do the 40, but you know I want you back. Take the one if you want.”
“Absolutely,” Bradley stated. “Let’s face the table, here we go, one, six, or 40, what do you reckon?”
Taking on the direction of her teammates, Emma decided: “I’m just going to stick with the six.”
Pushing forward with the next round, Bradley confirmed: “6,000 it is, thank you chaser.”
But at that moment the 1,000 offer on the board changed to a bright red -£3,000 before the table was cleared.
Analysing Emma’s first round of questions, Shaun commented: “That was a very good performance, I was really impressed with that.”
But viewers were very much focused on the bizarre change in the low offer after it flashed up.
One took to Twitter to say: “Wait, the lower offer changed from 1k to -3k… #thechase.”
Another asked: “Judging by the editing screw up earlier, low offer of -£3,000? #TheChase.”
“And top offer of £51,000,” another eagle-eyed fan wrote in reply.
Unfortunately, Emma was caught by the Dark Destroyer, with two spaces away from securing her place in the Final Chase.
Because of this, she was knocked out of the show and couldn’t compete alongside the others.
“You were unlucky there,” Shaun admitted to the player.
Shaun later failed to defeat the other three contestants in the final battle, with the team proving to be a difficult opponent.
They took home a total of £5,000 each.
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
