Being one of the biggest shows on ABC, The Good Doctor became an instant hit after premiering in 2017. As fans eagerly await Dr Shaun Murphy’s (played by Freddie Highmore) comeback to St Bonaventure Hospital, showrunner David Shore teased a potential ‘internal nemesis’ for the beloved character.

Shaun Murphy joined the San Jose based hospital as a surgical resident to get away from his troubled past in Wyoming.

As he lived with autism, his hiring was deemed controversial and created divisions across the board.

However, he was later able to prove them wrong as his condition gave him the ability to note minute details and changes, which others often missed.

Shaun learned how to take control of his emotions and was able to and eventually became a Doctor.

Ahead of the season five premiere, executive producer David Shaun was interviewed by TVLine.

During the conversation, he made an interesting revelation and teased fans about what issues could arise for Shaun in the upcoming instalment.

He shared: “We’re bringing in an internal nemesis this season, which is something Freddie [Highmore] talked to me about doing last year, and we’re having a lot of fun with that.

“This [nemesis] tests everybody, including Shaun,” Shore highlighted. “Of course, Shaun is going to have a different point of view on it.”

This ‘internal nemesis’ is set to cause a major issue for Shaun because he is also planning his wedding to Lea Dilallo (Paige Spara).

The two began their relationship towards the end of season three after being neighbours who shared a passion for cars and video games.

More recently Lea and Shaun also work together as she ran the hospital’s IT department.

Perhaps, the nemesis could threaten their marriage or even their arrival, it could also be someone from his past.

The season premiere will also introduce Rachel Bay Jones to the cast of The Good Doctor, as Salen Morrison.

Later in the interview, David shared, the actress will not be playing a doctor, so there is the potential for her to be the nemesis.

He stated: “Her character is one of the most fun we’ve had.

“I just love what this actress brings, what this character brings, she just has a great dynamic and a great energy. She is just going going going,” he added.

The final time viewers saw the group of doctors, they were on a rescue mission in Guatemala where Claire Brown (Antonia Thomas) stayed after she was offered a job.

Season four saw the medical professional make the heartbreaking decision on which 12 people to get a look in to operate on when there was an overwhelming amount of sick people.

Thankfully for fans, the group will return to the hospital with season five picking up not long after a brief time jump.

The Good Doctor season 5 premieres on ABC in the USA on Monday, September, 7. A UK date is yet to be announced.
