‘Perfectly healthy’ dad-of-six, 44, dies from coronavirus just two days after getting diagnosis – The Sun

A "PERFECTLY" healthy' dad-of-six died from coronavirus complications just two days after getting diagnosed with the potentially deadly illness.

Adolph "T.J." Mendez, 44, passed away Thursday at the Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas.

The kindergarten teacher leaves behind his wife, Angela Mendez, three sons and two daughters.

Angela, told the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung: “You hear that the people who die are older, or have previous health conditions, but he was neither and the virus took him down hard.

“It can happen to anyone, it’s not just a story that happens to people across the world.

"It’s here and it’s real and it can kill anyone, just like it did my husband."

She said her husband didn't smoke or drink, he had healthy eating habits, worked out, and took vitamins daily.

His coronavirus diagnosis was revealed on Tuesday after taking the test last week.

Adolph's daughter, Brenda Johnson, recalled her dad being "the best kind of father and in "perfectly healthy" condition.

Brenda told the Herald-Zeitung: "He was patient. He cared about others.

"He loved his family so much. He was very involved in our community and our church."

Adolph – a resident of New Braunfels, Texas – was called "Mr. Sticker Man" by his students because he would hand out stickers and put stickers given to him on his name badge, said Brenda.

On Thursday afternoon, Comal County Judge Sherman Krause stated: “This tragic news emphasizes the need for all of us to make sure we are taking every effort to maintain social distancing measures."

He stressed the importance of "protecting ourselves, our loved ones and the most vulnerable among us from contracting COVID-19.”

Adolph's death comes as the United States now has the largest number of reported coronavirus cases in the world.

The US has now passed Italy and China, where the virus originated, with at least 85,600 cases as of Thursday – though President Trump questioned the accuracy of the Chinese figures.

Additionally, at least 1,850 people in America have died from the virus.
