MEATPACKING company JBS suffered an “organized cyberattack,” canceling working shifts for Tuesday, June 1, 2021.

The company announced in a statement that it is unclear when those shifts will resume. 

Who owns JBS meatpacking?

JBS meatpacking subsidiary is owned by JBS S.A., a Brazilian company known as the world’s largest processor of fresh beef and pork.

The subsidiary was created when JBS entered the US market in 2007 after acquiring Swift & Company.

JBS is headquartered in Greeley, Colorado but its operations trace back to 1855 in Eastham, Massachusetts.

As of 2017, the company has produced more than $50billion in annual sales.

It also accounts for almost a quarter of all meat processing in the US.

What happened to JBS meatpacking?

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, the company suffered a cyber breach affecting working shifts for beef and pork plants located in Ottumwa, Iowa; Worthington, Minnesota; Cactus, Texas; and Greeley, Colorado.

The attack affected some of its servers supporting its North American and Australian IT systems.

JBS Canada announced on Facebook that shifts were canceled at the Brooks, Alberta plant for Monday, June 1.

Only one shift was cancelled for Tuesday, June 2 as of now. 

JBS Australia might take days before production resumes in the country.

Australian Agriculture Minister David Littleproud assured the public that the government and Australian Federal Police were working with JBS to resolve the problems from the cyberattack. 

“Despite the fact that JBS accounts for around 20% of our processing production here in Australia, we’re not expecting there to be significant impacts on exports so long as this isn’t a protracted shutdown,” said Littleproud.

“We’re also working with JBS right here in Australia to make sure that we can get some limited capacity up and going in the next couple of days. 

“JBS have been very proactive in that,” he added.

JBS employs over 11,000 people and assured the public in a statement that they are working to fix the issue, saying: “The company’s backup servers were not affected and it is actively working with an Incident Response firm to restore its systems as soon as possible.”
